Clipboard Express WordPress Plugin

by Terri Ann on May 7, 2008

I at one point got tired of seeing that I had 4 drafts saved in my blog that were holding nothing but a list of links that I needed to have access to while not on my main computer.

I wished I had a clipboard in WordPress where I could store links and information I needed access to without cluttering up my WordPress drafts. So I made it. The plugin is called Clipboard Express and is accessible form the subnav in both the Write and Manage sections of the WordPress admin.

Individuality – Each user gets their own clipboard to use, and no user can see the other’s clipboard. At first this project started out with just one shared clipboard but I figured this would be a nice feature to start out with, a nice multi-user approach.

It’s been a real help for me. I keep some notes about formatting in there, so I can be consistent with how I handle thumbnails, screen shots and page links. Give ‘er a try and post a comment here to let me know what you’d like to see or any bugs you find!

Documentation

Clipboard Express is added as a subnav under ‘Manage‘ and ‘Write‘ so that it is one click away if you are managing or wiring a new entry or page.

Each user has their own clipboard which is not accessible by any other user.

New in 1.2.1 – Clipboard Express also lives as a module under the ‘post’ content edit box when adding or managing posts and pages on your site. This capability leaves it easy for you to modify the clipboard and choose whether or not to save your changes once you are ready to save or edit your draft, post or page.

Installation

Upon installation and activation the Clipboard Express will start with blank clipboards for every user.

Uninstall

When you uninstall or deactivate the plugin through WordPress’ Plugin Management interface it will delete all user’s clipboards. I will determine in the future if this is a necessary action but that’s how it was built so be aware. Naw, it will save your shiz forever!

Plans

I plan to add additional features to this plugin as time goes on. AKA when I find the time or when I find the need.

  • Add a clipboard module (or a mini-version) to the entry and page add and edit pages Updated in 1.2 release
  • Maybe made the clipboard render and do an ajax (probably just JavaScript) click to edit (almost Flickr style) so links added can be clickable and more easily accessible from the clipboard
    • Would have to process links and target="_blank" and not lose spacing and not render spacing tags <p> or <br />

If I only knew for this plugin before.. I have used comments on posts to write notes while behind some corporate proxy where Gmail, Google Docs, Google Notebook and other tools made for this weren’t accessible.
